Most industries use water at some point in the production processes including washing, cooling, and product integration. Water scarcity, the price of water and wastewater discharge, as well as stricter regulatory requirements are all factors that influence whether an industry takes a step towards improved water and wastewater management.
Technological solutions to improve water management and promote a circular water economy are critical in ensuring sustainable development of the subcontinent.

The Competence Centre: Water Management (CC:WM) was established at the Cape Town Regional Office in March 2019. The activities of the CC:WM are partly subsidised by the German Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWi). The CC:WM aims to promote bilateral exchange of technology and know-how between Germany and southern Africa in water management, encompassing the entire water value chain from source to wastewater treatment. The German water sector can offer advanced technologies with many years of experience and can contribute toward overcoming the water management crisis in southern Africa.
The objectives of the CC:WM are to:
The activities of the CC:WM are currently strongly focused on water and wastewater management in industries. Resilience of industries to changing water availability is critical in ensuring that our economy continues to grow. At the same time, industries must grow sustainably and not jeopardise water resources that should be available for human consumption and sanitation.
