COFFEE IS BIG BUSINESS

COFFEE IS BIG BUSINESS

Said to be worth $100 billion and sitting second only to oil and larger than natural gas, corn, sugar and gold. According to the scribes at Business Insider, we drink 500 billion cups per annum. Coffee is grown in 50 countries and, in the farming sector alone, supplies a livelihood for 25 million people. Brazil, Vietnam and Columbia produce more than 50% of the world’s coffee and Finland drinks more coffee per capita than any other country in the world. Although the United States is ranked at 25th in the per capita stakes, they consume more coffee than any other country. You have probably seen coffee shops opening all around you and this is because coffee shops are the fastest growing sector of the restaurant industry. Even the mighty Coca-Cola has invested in this sector, evident by their recent purchase of Costa Coffee, a UK based chain of 3 800 coffee shops. This investment cost Coca-Cola $5.1 Billion and they will surely soon be taking on the two primary international players, Starbucks who now operates in 77 countries, and Nestle. Coffee consumption in South Africa is still growing and our statistics are yet to make the charts. There are many professional coffee shops in East London along with two coffee roasting businesses, both of which produce freshly roasted coffee of the highest standard.
