Daxi’s | From dream to reality

What started off as a dream to own and run his own craft brewery in 2013, has now become a reality for Craig Mayhew with the recent opening of Daxi’s Craft Brewery & Family Eatery.

Although he had a successful engineering consultancy, brewing beer became his passion and his vision!  On returning from a beer brewing course he attended in England he purchased a small 50L brewing system and spent many weekends creating recipes and brewing various types of beer in his garage in Durban. At the same time he set the wheels in motion to build a brewpub in Kidd’s Beach, East London, where the family had spent many a holiday at their holiday home.

The name for the brewery was easy – with 4 miniature dachshunds and a love for all things dachshund – Daxi’s Craft Brewery was born!  Then came the design for the logo (which had to include a dachshund!) beer labels, stationery, uniforms and the like.  Whilst searching for the perfect spot to build the brewpub!

That perfect spot was found, and applications were made for all the relevant approvals, with the building finally commencing in July 2017. “In March of this year. I was given the keys to a beautiful new building that houses not only the brewery, but also a family eatery and small children’s playground” says Craig.  Heeagerly moved his 600L system into the new brewery and this is where you’ll find him each weekday either brewing, hand bottling, labelling or kegging – definitely 100% handcrafted beer!

There’s a range of 10 Daxi’s ales and lagers, a pink G&T, Everson’s pomegranate cider and 2 fine wines from the Cape – all available on tap, as well as a fully stocked bar.

The idyllic setting in Kidd’s Beach offers a great experience for the whole family.  From burgers to pizzas, to tapas and street food along with a kiddies menu you’ll not go home hungry!
